Mark Lowery, director of Instrumental Music at El Camino High School recently received the “Honorary Life Membership” award for his years of dedication to music education from the Southern California School Band Orchestra Association. The1200 member association selects  one person each year for this prestigious award. Mark has been a musician all his life and comes from a musical family. His brother and sister as well as his parents are musicians and music educators. He began playing the clarinet in his elementary school band. In the 7th grade became a bassoonist and continues to play the bassoon today.  Mark graduated from California State University at Long Beach with a degree in Music Education and a teaching credential. He has taught music for over 30 years in Southern California. Mark came to El Camino High School in 1992 and teaches concert band, two orchestras, wind ensemble and marching band. He also serves as the Chairperson of the Music Department. His bands and orchestras have performed all over the United States and his Marching Units have performed at several professional football game half time shows.  As an active participant in music education, Mark has served on the board of directors for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) for more than 20 years. He has served two terms as President and Vice-President and several other board positions.  He serves as a clinician and judges at several music festivals and marching band competitions each year.  His dedication to his work earned him the honor of "Teacher of the Year" for the Oceanside Unified School District in 2004/2005.  The El Camino Instrumental Music Department strives to present an opportunity for every student who plays a musical instrument to be involved in a musical ensemble.
